I'm DONE!

Hello to all,

I finished my first 8 weeks in Guatemala City! Yay! I just said goodbye to my host family. It was kind of strange leaving my house for the last time, and it seems like forever ago that I arrived and moved into my room, completely nervous, scared, and excited for what was to come. Overall, my host family experience was fine, definitely different from what I expected, but I made it work I guess. I will miss my host dad the most, he was so kind and helpful to me, and we watched so much soccer together. So, as I move on from this first experience, I look ahead to service and Nebaj, Guatemala! I leave tomorrow, and 4:30 AM, oh MY word, on a chicken bus which will be about a 6 hour direct route, which means no changing buses, yay! I am now at CASAS and am hoping that the orientation we have in 2 hours will be somewhat helpful since I really have no idea what to expect on what we'll be doing, living arrangements, food, etc.

I had a pretty low key weekend. Saturday I was home by myself for most of the day, my parents went out shopping then went to a wedding. I watched Toronto and Houston MLS soccer, slept through the Cananda Honduras Gold Cup game, then watched the US Panama game, though my family took me out to Pollo Campero last night, the famous KFC of Guatemala, so sadly I didn't get to watch the overtime period. But, it was really nice of them to take me out, and we had a great time. Jenna, who has been living with me, spent the day and evening with her old host family. This morning Jenna and I went with my family to the Presbyterian service, which was LONG, but interesting. After a thorough tour of the church and buildings by Oscar we returned home, finished packing, and had lunch: hot dogs, french fries, Coke, and ice cream. Yummmm. Ha. Oscar, Sheny, and even Tobi the dog dropped us off at CASAS around 2 pm. The end!

So I guess there's not much else to write. Thanks so much again for all your prayers and support, they have definitley been felt and appreciated. It's hard to believe that I have less than 4 weeks left! I'm looking forward to the next adventure, and if I don't get a chance to write in Nebaj, I will definitely spend lots of time when I return to the city August 13th to update you on everything that happened.

Adios and much love,
Rachel

  1. Rachel,
Its been quit a busy summer for us. I don't know where June and July went. They came and went so quickly that I start back to work in less than a week. We start back the 18th of August. So we are looking forward to you coming back to Indiana for your last year of school. We will see you then. Take care and enjoy what time you have left there.
